    Distribution

    Northern Vietnam (Thai Nguyen Province).

    General Description

    Lithophytic and occasionally terrestrial herb with 3–5 distichous leaves. Leaves coriaceous-leathery, ovate to oblong-elliptic, obtuse at unequally bilobed apex, 8–17(20) cm long, 2.5–7 cm wide, glossy greyish green and dark green marbled, sometimes with a pronounced white margin, spotted or flushed with purple beneath, strongly keeled on lower surface, glabrous or sparsely white ciliated along margin at the base. Inflorescence erect, 1(2)- flowered; peduncle 15–25 cm long, 4mm in diameter, purple-violet or purple-brown, densely white or light-brown hairy; bract broadly-ovate, acute, conduplicate, 1.8–3 cm long, 1.6–2 cm wide, dull pale green finely spotted with purple. Flower very large for size of plant, 10–12 cm across, 8–9 cm high; sepals white or pink with pink-purple flushing towards the tips; petals white, pink or purple strongly flushed purple in apical two-thirds to three-quarters; lip white, pink or purple with a deep-purple stain on front especially around the rim, spotted with deep purple within; staminode large lemon-yellow, white on margin with an olive-green center; pedicel and ovary 2.5–2.8 cm long, pale yellowish green with fine purple spotting, densely whitehairy. Dorsal sepal erect, slightly recurved on lateral margins, elliptic-obovate, acute and canaliculate towards apex, 4.2–5.1 cm long, 2.5–3 cm wide, white pubescent on outer surface, keeled on outer side. Synsepal elliptic-ovate, bidentate, 3–4.6 cm long, 3–3.3 cm wide, pubescent on outer surface, margin with white hairs, keeled on outer side. Petals incurved or spreading-deflexed, oblong-elliptic to obovate, obtuse to rounded at apex, 5–6 cm long, 3.3– 4.5 cm wide, finely pubescent on both sides, white villose at base, lateral lower margin sometimes strongly recurved. Lip subporrect, deeply urceolate, subglobose, 3.5–4 cm long, 2.5–4 cm wide, flared at base, with apical margin incurved and grooved along veins. Column short, 5–7mm long; staminode convex, broadly rhombic or broadly sagittate, blunt, truncate, white ciliated at margin, 17–25mm long, 15–20mm wide, curving forwards towards apex; stigma spathulate, very shortly papillose; anthers with dry pollen.

    Habitat

    Primary, broad-leaved, evergreen, wet, closed forests on highly eroded, crystalline limestone hills, 350–550 m, flowering in the wild in March.
