    [FTEA]

Acanthaceae (part 1), Kaj Vollesen, Flora of Tropical East Africa, 2008

    Habit
Densely branched dwarf-shrub to 25 cm tall, branch-systems becoming divaricately branched and the single branches eventually becoming spine tipped; branches finely uniformly sericeous-puberulous, soon glabrous with smooth white bark.
    Leaves
Leaves: lamina narrowly elliptic-obovate, largest 1–2.1 × 0.3–0.6 cm, margin entire, finely and sparsely puberulous.
    Inflorescences
Spikes solitary, persistent; bracts greenish with white margins to yellowish brown, ovate-elliptic, finely sericeous, acuminate to acute with straight tip and entire margins; lower pair 2–3 mm long, second pair 3–4 mm long, third pair 6–7 mm long, inner pair 8–9 mm long; bracteoles absent.
    Calyx
Sepals finely and uniformly sericeous, green, brownish towards margins; dorsal elliptic with long ligulate apical part, 13–14 mm long, acuminate; ventral similar, 11–12 mm long, with two acute teeth; lateral 8–9 mm long.
    Corolla
Corolla cream with blue veins, 13–15 mm long of which the tube 4–5 mm; callus without apical flanges.
    Filaments
Filaments 4–5 mm long, exserted, glabrous; appendage ± 0.5 mm long, broadly rounded; anthers 2–3 mm long.
    Fruits
    Capsule ± 6 mm long.
    Seeds
    Seed not seen.
    Ecology
Acacia bushland on rocky lava hills; 350–1050 m
    Note
Only known from four collections. A very distinct species recognised by the development of spiny branches, a character to my knowledge unique in Blepharis. It is related to B. tanae from which it also differs in the indumentum, in the larger bracts, sepals and corolla and in the different habitat.
