    Habit
    Upright perennial, rarely annual; stems thick and fleshy, densely leaved, little branched, often becoming rather woody and leafless below.
    Leaves
    Leaves spirally arranged; petiole (0.5–)1–9.5 cm. long, glabrous or sparsely pubescent, usually with several 0.5–1 mm. long fimbriae towards the base; lamina broadly ovate, ovate-oblong, elliptic or ± lanceolate, 5.5–22 cm. long, 3–8.5(–9.5) cm. broad, the apex subobtuse, acute or shortly acuminate, the base cuneate or ± attenuate, glabrous or with scattered hairs above, glabrous or pubescent on the midrib and lateral veins beneath; lateral veins 6–12 pairs; margin crenate, the crenations usually overlapping.

    Flowers in fascicles of 2–6(–8), rarely solitary, epedunculate, the spur orange, red, crimson or reddish purple and the petals pale yellowish green or whitish green.
    Bracts
    Bracts linear-lanceolate or subulate, 1–2 mm. long, inconspicuous.
    Pedicel
    Pedicels 2.8–5.5 cm. long, slender, glabrous or pubescent.
    Calyx
    Lateral sepals triangular-ovate, 1.5–2 mm. long, acute, reflexed. Lower sepal 8–14 mm. long, 19–28 mm. deep, saccate, the orifice oblique, glabrous or sparsely pubescent, abruptly constricted into a sharply incurved caudate spur which is usually slightly 2-lobed at the tip and just reaches the rim of the lower sepal.
    Corolla
    Dorsal petal 9–10 mm. long, 4–6 mm. broad, cucullate, dorsally with a narrow triangular crest in the upper half. Lateral united petals 10–13 mm. long, the upper petal ± twice the size of the lower; upper petal oblong to oblong-oval, 8–9 mm. long, 4–5 mm. broad; lower petal oval-elliptic or suborbicular, 3–4 mm. long, 2.5–3 mm. broad, obtuse.
    Ovary
    Ovary glabrous.
    Fruits
    Fruit fusiform, 14–16 mm. long, 5–7 mm. broad.

    In moist usually densely shaded areas, rain-forest, riverine and swampy forests, shrubby places and pathways, occasionally on the mossy trunks and stumps of trees; 700–2250 m.
