    Habit
    Small tree 5–8(–13) m tall with thick bark and large corky lenticels.
    Leaves
    Leaves large, 0.9–1.8 m long, 2–3-pinnate.
    Leaflets
    Leaflets ovate-elliptic, (7–)9–16 × 3–9 cm, long, obtuse to cordate at the base, acuminate at the apex.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescences on thick branch-like peduncles, persistent, ± 35 cm long.
    Pedicel
    Pedicels 3–7 cm long.
    Calyx
    Calyx blackish purple, 3–4.5 cm long.
    Corolla
    Corolla deep maroon to reddish purple outside, yellowish or pinkish inside; tube 5–7 cm long, 3 cm wide at throat; lobes obovate, 4–6 × 3–4.5 cm.
    Fruits
    Fruit sword-like, 50–75(–100) × 7–9 cm, flat, narrowed to both ends; valves ± woody with mid- and marginal ridges.
    Seeds
    Seeds elliptic, ± 6.5 × 3 cm including the very thin membranous wing.
    Note
    Native of India, Ceylon, Southeast Asia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Known from a single specimen only in the Migombani Gardens, Zanzibar. We have seen no material and do not know if this tree is still extant.
