    Dioecious trees or shrubs, often aromatic.
    Leaves
    Leaves alternate, petiolate or subsessile, discolorous, persistently tomentose or lanate on the lower surface, entire to coarsely irregularly serrate towards the apex (sometimes 3-lobed at the apex in South Africa).
    Synflorescence
    Synflorescence of numerous heads in terminal or axillary panicles, the whole synflorescence usually tomentose-lanate.
    Capitulum
    Female capitula 1- or 2–3-flowered; corollas shorter than the ovary, villous or lanate outside, lobes 4–5 equalling the tube in length; anthers 0; style branches exserted, short flat ovate; achenes ± flattened obovoid or ellipsoid, densely lanate; pappus 0. Male capitula many-flowered, corollas tubular or funnel-shaped, longer than in the female florets, villous or lanate outside, lobes 5 recurved; anther thecae exserted, bases tailed; style narrowly terete, simple or minutely bifid, exserted; ovary abortive or rudimentary; pappus 0. Capitula unisexual, disciform; receptacle epaleate or sometimes with long silky hairs; phyllaries 1–2-seriate.
