    In East Africa usually a deciduous shrub to 6 m but typically a tree to 30 m tall with rather smooth bark, sometimes flowering when almost leafless.
    Leaves palmately 5(–7)-foliolate.
    Leaflets ovate to elliptic, 5–19 × 1.5–9 cm, cuneate to almost subcordate at the base, entire or slightly serrate towards apex, acuminate at the apex, glabrous to slightly pubescent above, ± densely pubescent beneath.
    Petiole 4–13 cm long ± pubescent; petiolules 1–4 cm long.
    Flowers in a terminal usually congested cluster or panicle.
    Calyx 4–9 mm long, densely pale velvety-pubescent.
    Corolla magenta or orange-pink, the throat yellow at first becoming purplish, base of tube sometimes orange, pubescent outside, narrowly funnel-shaped; tube 2.5–5 cm long, 1.2–2 cm wide at the throat; lobes 1–2 cm long.
    Fruit cylindrical, 12–56 × 1.3–2.6 cm, glabrous.
    Seeds 3.4–8 × 1–1.6 cm.
