    Succulent perennials with tuberous or rhizomatous rootstock
    Leaves
    Basal leaves petiolate, usually subcircular, at least 2 cm. in diameter, glabrous; cauline leaves much smaller

    Flowers 5-merous, numerous, in a terminal bracteate raceme or panicle
    Calyx
    Calyx small, 5-partite
    Corolla
    Corolla tubular, urceolate or campanulate, distinctly synpetalous; lobes ± erect, longer or shorter than the tube
    Stamens
    Stamens 10, rarely 5, epipetalous; filaments short
    Fruits
    Follicles slender; stipes rather short or absent; seeds numerous.
