    Habit
    Shrubby herb to 1.5 m; cystoliths present.
    Leaves
    Leaves ovate, apex acute, base cuneate.
    Flowers
    Flowers in shortly pedunculate ovoid terminal racemoid cymes to 6 cm long; bracts green, ovate, to 2 cm long; bracteoles lanceolate, to 1.2 cm long.
    Calyx
    Calyx deeply divided into 5 lanceolate acute puberulous lobes to 1 cm long.
    Corolla
    Corolla rose-pink, to 6 cm long (along upper lip), with a hooded 2-lobed upper lip and recoiled 3-lobed lower lip.
    Stamens
    Stamens 2, held under upper lip; anthers bithecous, thecae at different height, lower theca apiculate.
    Distribution
    Native of tropical America. Widely cultivated in the Old World tropics.
