    Habit
    Perennial erect herb from a woody rootstock.
    Stem
    Stems few to many, 15–80 cm. tall, rather coarse, ribbed, pubescent with short spreading or ± appressed hairs.
    Leaves
    Leaves sessile, linear to ovate, up to 10–16 x 1·2–9 mm., acute to obtuse at the apex, truncate at the base, shortly often appressed pubescent on both sides, mainly at the margins and along the midvein beneath; margin entire or denticulate; venation, at least the midvein, distinct beneath.
    Flowers
    Flowers in ± lax, 4–7(15)–flowered, pedunculate racemes; pedicels 5–18(30) mm. long, densely strigulose to white–pubescent; bracts lanceolate, 3–6(10) mm. long, entire; bracteoles usually at or near the base of the pedicel, linear, 1–3(5) mm. long.
    Hypanthium
    Hypanthium broadly obconical, ± oblique, ± 8–nerved, strigulose to densely white–pubescent.
    Calyx
    Calyx–lobes narrowly triangular, 3–7 mm. long, entire, glabrous to sparsely strigulose or pubescent, somewhat gibbous at the base.
    Corolla
    Corolla 16–23 mm. long, pink or mauve with two longitudinal crests in the mouth of the tube, split to the base on the back, pubescent outside, papillose inside, at least near mouth of the tube; lower lobes obovate–oblong, 7–13 mm. long; upper lobes lanceolate, recurved, 5–7 mm. long.
    Filaments
    Filaments linear, ± pilose in upper part, connate above, attached to corolla–tube at the base.
    Anthers
    Anther–tube 2.4–3 mm. long, all anthers densely hairy at the apex and ± pilose on the connectives outside.
    Ovary
    Ovary semi–inferior to semi–superior.
    Fruits
    Capsule ± 8–nerved, strigulose to densely white–pubescent, with 2 valves 3–6 mm. long.
    Seeds
    Seeds ± broadly elliptic in outline, trigonous, 0·8–1 mm. long, very finely reticulate, brown.
