    Habit
    Herb, creeping and rooting at nodes or more often floating and then normally producing clusters of whitish to pinkish, inflated, spongy, fusiform, floating roots from the nodes (this is the only East African species in the genus to produce them thus); plant glabrous to sometimes more or less densely spreading-pubescent.
    Leaves
    Leaves variable in shape, spathulate to linear-lanceolate, mostly 1–10 cm. long, 0.7–4 cm. wide, rounded and emarginate to acute at apex, lateral nerves 6–12 each side of midrib; petiole 2–50 mm. long.
    Calyx
    Sepals 4–5, 5–14 mm. long, 1.5–2.75 mm. wide.
    Corolla
    Petals yellow (always so in Africa) or white, obovate or sometimes elliptic, 7–24 mm. long, 4–10 (or? more) mm. wide.
    Stamens
    Stamens twice as many as sepals.
    Pistil
    Apex of ovary, supporting the 4–8 mm. long style, flat or nearly so.
    Fruits
    Capsules firm-walled, not or only very slowly dehiscent, 1.2–4 cm. long, 2.5–4 mm. wide, marked on the outside with little bumps 1.5–2 mm. apart, corresponding to the seeds; pedicels 0.5–8 cm. long.
    Seeds
    Seeds uniseriate in each cell, pendulous, each enclosed in and firmly attached to a more or less quadrate piece of endocarp about 1.5 mm. long and wide, the actual seed 1–1.5 mm. long and 0.5–0.7 mm. wide.
    Distribution
    Widespread in the tropics and warmer regions of the Old and New Worlds.
