    Habit
    Bulbous plants without a well-developed rhizome; bulb scales in 2 rows.
    Leaves
    Leaves in 2 rows, thick, without petioles and midrib, appearing during or after flowering.
    Scape
    Scape solid, lateral or central among the leaves; involucral bracts 4 to several, differing in size, either drooping and soon withering or erect and conspicuous at anthesis.
    Flowers
    Flowers many, regular; perianth segments white to pink or red, with ± funnel-shaped tube and free segments.
    Filaments
    Filaments arising from base of perianth segments, filiform.
    Ovary
    Ovary globose, with 1–2 ovules per locule; style with undivided stigma.
    Fruits
    Fruit a globose berry.
    Ecology
    A genus of about 25 species distributed throughout South Africa and Namibia; most species in the winter rainfall area and only one species reaching the Flora area.
