    General Description
    Terrestrial or rupicolous, perennial, glabrous herb; rhizome thick, erect, later sparsely branched with rather thick adventitious roots. Prophylls [cataphylls] elongate-ovate, keeled, with apiculate or aristate apices, up to 20 cm long, and 9 cm wide where flattened out. LEAVES: Leaf blade ovate or lanceolate, at the base cordate with a broad sinus or truncate, at the apex acute or obtuse, apiculate, with basal veins palmate in two to three pairs and midrib veins pinnate and ca. six on each side, coriaceous, dull green, slightly paler on lower surface, 25 - 57 cm long, 13 - 38 cm wide. INFLORESCENCE: Peduncle robust, terete, 9 - 20 cm long. Spathe oblong-ovate and boat-shaped at the apex, rigidly erect, reddish at first later becoming olive or green, 6 - 16 cm long and up to 8 cm wide. Spadix oblong, more-or-less narrowing, smoky coloured, 7 - 16 cm long. Perianth 2 mm long, 2 - 2.5 mm wide. Filaments oblanceolate. INFRUCTESCENCE: Fruit a succulent, oblong berry white proximally and purple distally, 7 - 8 mm long, ca. 4 mm wide, when perfect with 2 - seeds in a mucilaginous pulp, extruded from the perianth, and at maturity hanging by filiform carpophores. Seeds plano-convex, 4 - 5 mm long, 2.5 - 3 mm wide, ochre-yellow.
