    General Description
    Stem erect, to 3 cm diam.; internodes 1-2 cm long; cataphylls lanceolate, 2-2.5 dm [20 - 25 cm] long, lanceolate, papyrus-like, finally weathered into fibers. LEAVES: Petiole elongate, erect, rigid, thickened at the base, unisulcate adaxially; long-sheathed and geniculum 2-4 cm long, thick, cylindrical; blades membranaceous-cartilaginous, green, ovate or oval, 3-4 dm [30 - 40 cm] long, 2-3 dm [20 - 30 cm] wide; posterior lobes 1/3-1/4 as long as anterior lobe, retrorse, obtuse, mutually overlapping, continuous with anterior lobe in moderately convex line; sinus narrow; primary lateral veins of the posterior lobes connate briefly into posterior ribs, the majority retrorse, abruptly arcuate near the margin and merging with the margin; interlobar vein together with 13-15 pairs primary lateral veins, far apart, spreading at about a 90 degree angle, joined into a collective vein variously 4-8 mm from the margin. INFLORESCENCE: Peduncle 2-3 times longer than petiole, erect, rigid, antrorsely angled; spathe herbaceous, subcoriaceous, linear-lanceolate, long-subulate at the apex, red-greenish below, reddish above, 2-2.5 dm [20 - 25 cm] long, 2.5-3 cm wide; spadix elongate, flexible, attenuate upward, to 3 dm [30 cm] long, 10-12 mm diam.; after anthesis increasing in size, becoming purple.
