    Diagnostic
    It is usually terrestrial and is characterized by its large, triangular-ovate, coriaceous blades which are conspicuously punctuate on the lower surface and have a collective vein arising from the uppermost basal vein and running far from the margin to the obtuse to retuse apex. Its inflorescence has a long, pale green to dull maroon, slightly tapered spadix and a recurled, green tinged with purple or tawny-brown spathe. The fruits are purplish.
    General Description
    Terrestrial plant with erect, elongated stem 1.5 ?m ["cm"] tall, ca. 1 cm thick, Cataphylls lanceolate, elongated. LEAVES: Petiole 53 - 60 cm long, 4 - 6 mm thick. Leaf blade coriaceous, rich deep green above, paler below, erect, broadly ovate-hastate, 25 - 30 cm long, 15 - 16 cm wide, obtuse at the apex, broadly subcordate at the base,posterior lobes short or semi-orbicular, 8 - 8.5 cm long, 8 - 8.5 cm wide, rounded, with a broad, semi-circular sinus, anterior lobe 15 -16 cm wide basally, 7 - 8 cm wide towards the apex, primary veins arising at the base 4 on each side, interlobe and inner most veins free, secondary veins densely crowded. INFLORESCENCE: Spathe subcoriaceous, dull green, reflexed, lanceolate, acuminate at the apex, decurrent at the base, 6.5 cm long, 1.5 cm wide basally. Spadix dull lavender, 9 - 15 cm long, 4 - 15 mm thick, slender and fusiform, stipitate, fruiting parts blood red. Tepals 1.8 - 3.5 mm long and 1.8 - 2.5 mm wide at anthesis. Ovary 1.5 - 2 mm long.
    Distribution
    Anthurium ptarianum Steyermark is endemic to Venezuela and is known only from the states of Bolívar and Amazonas at 500 - 2,200 m.
