    Leaves persistent, alternate, rather leathery, sinuate- to serrate-dentate, petiolate, penninerved, stipulate

    Inflorescence along the midrib on the upper surface of the upper part of the leaves, either a few-flowered cyme, or sometimes reduced to a solitary flower, subtended by a major leafy bract and 2 lateral bracteoles; flowers bisexual or polygamous, pedicelled
    Calyx
    Sepals 3–4(–5), imbricate, rather irregular and dry
    Corolla
    Petals 4–6, imbricate, thin, much larger than the sepals
    Stamens
    Stamens 25–40, free; filaments subulate; anthers almost basifixed, dehiscent longitudinally, apiculate by the protruding connective
    Pistil
    Ovary superior, 1-locular, with 2–4 multiovulate placentas; style 1, shortly 2–4-fid
    Fruits
    Capsule opening with 2 or 3 valves; pericarp woody
    Seeds
    Seeds albuminate.
