    Habit
    Terrestrial.
    Rhizomes
    Rhizome long-creeping, to 5 mm diameter, with dark or mid-brown lanceolate subentire scales to 5 × 1.5 mm long, colour uniform.
    Leaves
    Fronds widely spaced, 50–85 cm high.
    Stipes
    Stipe 23–32 cm long, with shiny brown triangular-ovate minutely toothed acute scales to 3 mm.
    Leaf lamina
    Lamina dark green, lanceolate in outline, 32–44 × 18–20 cm, acuminate, 3-pinnatisect to 3-pinnatipartite, lower pinnae very slightly reduced, apical pinna unclear from type (decrescent I think).
    Pinnae
    Pinna in 20–25 pairs, opposite or alternate, triangular-lanceolate in outline, 10–13 × 3–4 cm, prolonged into a pinnatifid-lobed apex. %Pinnules obliquely ovate or ovate-oblong, 5–7-lobed or -pinnatisect in lowermost pinnules, with basiscopic base dimidiatecuneate, acroscopic base subtruncate to cuneate with enlarged lobe, apices irregularly subincised dentate-truncate, veins flabellate, subglabrous above, beneath with sparse shiny brown triangular-ovate scales to 1 mm, mainly on veins. %Rachis and pinnae rachis with scales similar to stipe.
    Sori
    Sori mostly along the pinnule centre and a few in the basal lobes, linear-oblong, 2–5 mm long.
    Indusium
    Indusium membranous, entire, ± 0.4 mm wide.
    Ecology
    Moist forest, Hagenia woodland, giant heath zone; 2150–2800 m
    Conservation
    Due to the fairly wide habitat and altitude range, this species is assessed as least Concern (LC).
    Note
    All material cited under this name in Pic.Serm. in B.J.B.B. 55: 153 (1985) & Johns, Pterid. trop. East Africa checklist: 68 (1991) is not this taxon. Cited by Schippers in Fern Gaz. 14, 6: 200 (1993) as occurring in Pare and W Usambara – I have seen no material from there.
