    Habit
    Small semi-deciduous tree up to 12 m. high; crown rounded; bark grey-brown to grey-black, furrowed; branchlets stout, greyish-black, velutinous, with bark peeling off to reveal a reddish-brown striated newly exposed surface which later becomes greyish-brown.
    Leaves
    Leaves spirally arranged, petiolate; lamina up to 25 x 13 cm., coriaceous, broadly obovate to obovate-elliptic, silvery-(or cupreous-in dried specimens)sericeous-tomentose or -tomentellous on both surfaces, eventually glabrescent, somewhat glaucous, apex rounded to subtruncate or occasionally emarginate and usually mucronate, base cuneate; lateral nerves 9–18 pairs, subprominent; petiole 1–2 cm. long, stout.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescences of lateral spikes 4–9 cm. long, usually in the axils of fallen leaves; rhachis tomentose; peduncle 2 cm. long, tomentose.
    Flowers
    Flowers creamy-white.
    Receptacle
    Lower receptacle tomentose; upper receptacle sericeous-pilose.
    Calyx
    Sepals triangular-acuminate.
    Stamens
    Stamens 5 mm. long; anthers 0·5 mm. long.
    Disc
    Disk pilose.
    Fruits
    Fruit 3·5–4 x 1·7–2·2 cm., elliptic-oblong, velutinous, apex emarginate, base subacute to truncate, stipe 5–7 mm. long.
