The native range of this species is Mexico to S. Tropical America, Tropical Africa, Arabian Peninsula, S. India, Sri Lanka. It is a perennial, lithophyte or epiphyte and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome. It is used to treat unspecified medicinal disorders and as a poison and a medicine.
