    Habit
    Perennial. Culms erect; 30-45 cm long. Leaf-sheath auricles erect. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blades coriaceous.

    Inflorescence a panicle, or composed of racemes. Panicle contracted. Racemes single. Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

    Spikelets comprising 4-8 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets cuneate; laterally compressed; 12-25 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus bearded.

    Fertile lemma lanceolate; coriaceous; without keel; 7-9 -veined. Lemma surface pilose. Lemma apex lobed; 2 -fid; incised 0.3 of lemma length; awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn from a sinus; geniculate. Palea 0.6 length of lemma; 2 -veined. Palea keels winged. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.
    Flowers
    Lodicules 2; membranous; obtuse. Anthers 3. Stigmas 3. Ovary pubescent all over.
