    Climbing or erect shrubs, rarely small trees with an indumentum of simple hairs or glabrous

    Flowers hermaphrodite, pedicellate, solitary or in extra-axillary cymes, rarely terminal, mostly borne on very characteristic thickened hooked peduncles; buds ovoid; bracts and bracteoles small, mostly numerous, usually deciduous
    Calyx
    Sepals 3, valvate, free or ± united at the base, equalling or smaller than the petals
    Corolla
    Petals 6, in 2 whorls of 3, both valvate, subequal, free, usually concave at the base and connivent over the stamens and carpels
    Stamens
    Stamens numerous (sometimes the outer ones staminodes), linear-oblong or cuneiform; filaments very short or absent; anther-cells extrorse; connective-appendages dilated, truncate
    Carpels
    Carpels mostly numerous, free, ovoid or ellipsoid, with 2 basal ovules; styles linear-oblong, shorter than or equalling the ovary
    Fruits
    Monocarps indehiscent, cylindric or ellipsoid, mostly not stipitate, 1–2-seeded, usually fleshy
    Seeds
    Seeds held vertically, collateral; aril absent
    Distribution
    A rather large genus of about 100 species occurring in tropical Africa and Asia.

    Habit
    Shrubs or rarely small trees, usually climbing or scrambling, with simple hairs.

    Buds ovoid.
    Flowers
    Flowers bisexual, solitary or in condensed cymes, extra-axillary (rarely terminal), pedicellate, on usually hooked and flattened peduncles.
    Bracteoles
    Bracts and bracteoles small, often caducous.
    Calyx
    Sepals 3, valvate, equal to the petals or shorter.
    Corolla
    Petals 6, free, in two equal or unequal whorls, both valvate, usually thick, erect or spreading, flat or ± subulate, usually ± concave at the base and enclosing the reproductive parts.
    Stamens
    Stamens ?, oblong or cuneiform, with thecae extrorse and connective-prolongation broadened and truncate, the outer ones sometimes staminodial; filaments very short or absent.
    Carpels
    Carpels few (6) to numerous, free; ovary ovoid or ellipsoid, with 2 basal ovules; style as long as the ovary or shorter, cylindric or ± flattened, oblique; stigma small.
    Fruits
    Ripe carpels indehiscent, succulent, cylindric or ellipsoid, 1–2-seeded.
    Seeds
    Seeds vertical, collateral; aril absent.
