This subspecies is accepted, and its native range is Iberian Peninsula to NW. Italy.

Ecology

Like the ssp. morio, it settles in extensive meadows and very bright woods. It disappears with intensification of the use of its biotopes. A certain ecological delimitation to ssp. champagneuxii might lie in the need for wetter areas. Subspecies picta settles on areas that are dryer.

Distribution

The taxon extends from the Mediterranean coastal region of the south of France to the lower Pyrenees and to large areas in Spain and Portugal at heights of less than 1,400 m. Of the western islands of the Mediterranean Sea, it was only on Corsica that any plants were proved.
