    Trees, shrubs or less often woody lianes; indumentum composed of simple hairs
    Flowers
    Flowers usually hermaphrodite or sometimes only male, solitary or paired, axillary or extra-axillary, pedicellate; buds subglobose; bracteoles present

    Sepals 3, valvate, smaller than the petals, joined at the base

    Petals 6, in 2 whorls of 3, valvate, subequal or the outer slightly larger, free, thick
    Stamens
    Stamens numerous, linear or cuneiform; anther-cells lateral or extrorse; connective-prolongation enlarged, capitate or truncate; filaments very short or obsolete
    Carpels
    Carpels 5–20, free, oblong-cylindric or compressed, with ± 20–25 biseriate ovules; stigmas sessile, capitate, bilobed or dilated and dorsally compressed
    Fruits
    Monocarps indehiscent, cylindrical, sessile or stipes almost obsolete, many-seeded, usually long, mostly curved or arcuate and twisted together
    Seeds
    Seeds horizontal, ellipsoid, compressed, not arillate.
