    Habit
    Perennial herb, the flowering stem often woody at base, 0.9–2 m high; rootstock woody; flowering stem simple but for the inflorescence, fulvous-tomentellous.
    Leaves
    Leaves of two kinds:basal (rosette) leaves petiolate, the petiole to 22 cm long, the blade ovate, 30–60 cm long, 12–32 cm wide, base cuneate and attenuate, margins irregularly dentate, apex obtuse, tomentellous beneath, scabridulous with tubercle-based hairs above, often slightly bullate; cauline leaves similar but much smaller and becoming sessile in the distal part of the stem, 8–20 cm long, 2.5–6 cm wide (to 2 by 0.5 cm in the inflorescence), with auriculate to semi-amplexicaul base, obtuse apex, and tomentose indument.
    Capitulum
    Capitula 8–12 mm long, heterogamous, several together in dense glomerules 2–4 cm across, these in turn arranged in dense corymbs, which are arranged in a large, lax, leafy panicle; stalks of individual capitula 2–3 mm long; phyllaries linear-lanceolate, 5–8 mm long, obtuse to acute, the outer tomentellous, the inner ciliate and with a pubescent apex.
    Florets
    Florets yellow, all tubular; outer florets few, filiform, tube (2.8–)3.4–5 mm long, lobes 0.2–0.3 mm long, style 3.3–6 mm long; inner florets many, tube narrowly infundibuliform, (2.8–)3.3–5.4 mm long, distally glandular, lobes 0.3–0.5 mm long and glandular, anthers 2.3–2.7 mm long, style 4.5–6.7 mm long.
    Fruits
    Achenes 1.5–2 mm long, sparsely pilose distally; pappus 3–6 mm long.

    Brachystegia - Isoberlinia woodland, wooded grassland, or grassland; 900–2100 m
