    Habit
    Shrubby herb 0.5–2.5(–4.5) m tall, with virtually glabrous flowering branches.
    Leaves
    Leaves ovate, 7–14 × 3–7 cm, acuminate, rounded to cordate at base, nearly glabrous to minutely puberulous; verticils 6(–10)-flowered.
    Bracts
    Bracts large, pink-red, enveloping buds, deciduous as flowers open.
    Calyx
    Calyx reddish or purplish, tubularcampanulate, 10–15 mm long, somewhat accrescent.
    Corolla
    Corolla rosy pink to reddish purple, 3–3.5 cm long; tube narrowed at both ends; lobes short, anterior ± equalling posterior, hairy.
