    Habit
    Erect perennial herb or woody herb with numerous stems from woody base, 60–240 cm high; stems pale green, glandular-hairy.
    Leaves
    Basal leaves sessile, oblong-elliptic or lyrate, 35–73 cm long, 9.7–12.5 cm wide, tapered into a petioloid base, margins pinnately lobed with large, oblanceolate, bidentate-lobulate terminal lobe and smaller ovate or broadly ovate dentate lateral lobes with rounded and apiculate apex; median and upper leaves sessile, lanceolate to broadly elliptic in outline, 5.5–17 cm long, 2.2–7 cm wide, auriculate at the base, pinnately lobed especially in lower part with ovate, denticulate lobes, obtuse to acute, acuminate-apiculate; all leaves sparsely shortly glandular-hairy to thinly arachnoid above, ± pubescent to arachnoid-tomentose beneath.
    Capitulum
    Capitula discoid, numerous in copious congested terminal and upper axillary corymbs; stalks of the individual capitula densely glandular; involucre 7–9 mm long, 3–3.5 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus 4–9, lax, narrow, lanceolate, 2–4.5 mm long; phyllaries 10–13, green with purplish tips to entirely purple, 7–8.5 mm long, shortly glandular-hairy.
    Florets
    Ray florets absent; disc florets purple or mauve, rarely blue or white, corolla 5–7.2 mm long, glabrous, lobes 1–1.2 mm long.
    Fruits
    Achenes (immature) 3.5–5 mm long, glabrous; pappus 5–7 mm long.
    Habitat
    Marshy ground by streams or in swamp edges, in ruderal sites such as road-sides and cultivation; (1200–)1500–2700 m
