    Trees, shrubs or shrublets, the young shoots often ± markedly compressed
    Leaves
    Leaves petiolate, alternate, involute in bud; stipules intrapetiolar, ± united, persistent or partially to completely deciduous
    Flowers
    Flowers axillary, in fascicles or solitary, heterostylous
    Calyx
    Sepals 5, valvate, triangular, connate and broadened at the base, ± coriaceous
    Corolla
    Petals white to yellowish cream, free, clawed; nectary-appendage large, usually exceeding the calyx, entire or 2–3-lobed
    Stamens
    Stamens with the filaments equal or unequal and then those opposite the sepals shorter, united at the base to form a deep ± persistent cup with entire or ± toothed margin
    Pistil
    Ovary (2–)3-locular, the locules with solitary ovules; styles free or partially united, spreading; stigmas obliquely capitate or rarely acute
    Fruits
    Fruit a 1-seeded drupe with the sterile locule ± apparent
    Seeds
    Seed oblong-ellipsoid; endosperm usually fleshy.

    Habit

    Leaves petiolate, alternate, simple, entire, involute when young, with venation varying in prominence and degree of reticulation; stipules intrapetiolar, ± united, persistent or partially to completely deciduous or caducous.
    Flowers
    Flowers axillary, in fascicles or solitary, heterostylic.
    Calyx
    Sepals 5, valvate, triangular, connate and broadened at the base, ± coriaceous.
    Corolla
    Petals white to cream-yellow, free, unguiculate; nectary appendage (ligule) large, usually exceeding the calyx, entire or 2–3-lobed.
    Stamens
    Stamens 5 + 5, with filaments equal or unequal (antisepalous shorter than antipetalous), united in the lower part to form a deep cup with margin entire or ± denticulate.
    Pistil
    Ovary (2) 3-locular with 1-ovulate loculi; styles free or partially united, divergent; stigmas obliquely capitate, rarely acute.
    Fruits
    Fruit a 1-seeded drupe, with sterile loculi ± apparent.
    Seeds
    Seed oblong-elliptic, usually with fleshy endosperm.
