    Stamens 8–12, equal, subequal or unequal; anthers subequal or unequal, opening by 1(–2) pores; connective not or hardly produced at the base, posteriorly terminating in a subulate or subulate-clavate spur, anteriorly terminating in 2 lobes or 2 linear appendages or exappendiculate
    Pistil
    Ovary adnate to the calyx, usually with 8, 10 or 12 septa above the middle (in Africa wholly adnate for most of its length), 4–5–6-locular; style filiform; stigma inconspicuous or rarely capitate

    Fruit a berry enclosed within the persistent calyx

    Seeds many, semi-ovate, smooth or punctate

    About 400 species, widespread through Madagascar, tropical Asia and the Pacific, with two species in Africa.
