    Habit
    Spiny shrubs, densely branched, spreading.
    Leaves
    Leaves usually in fascicles, sessile to subsessile more or less fleshy, entire.
    Flowers
    Flowers solitary or in fascicles, polygamous, usually on leafless branches.
    Perianth
    Perianth infundibuliform, 4 (5)lobed; lobes spreading (less so in female flowers), more or less 1/3–1/2 length of perianth.
    Stamens
    Stamens 8 (9), of two different lengths, the longer exserted, much reduced in female flowers; filaments connate into short more or less fleshy cup at base; anthers oblong-elliptic.
    Gynoecium
    Gynoecium reduced in functionally male flowers.
    Pistil
    Ovary stipitate, 1-ovulate; style asymmetrically inserted at apex of ovary, stout.
    Fruits
    Fruit enclosed in hardened, elongated, longitudinally 4-winged perianth-tube (anthocarp).
