    Type
Type: Paraguay, Dpto. Paraguan, Parque Nacional Ybycui, along road/trail to Salto Mbocaruzu on Rio Corrientes, 6 Oct. 1984, W. R. Buck 12012 (holotype NY[NY00144155]!; isotype PY-n.v.).
    Distribution
    Paraguay and Brazil (Parana).
    Ecology
Terrestrial or epipetric in open areas and inselbergs.
    Conservation
Data Deficient (DD) within IUCN (2012) guidelines.
    Note
Selaginella parviarticulata is characterised by its stems inconspicuously articulate, microphyll margins serrate to denticulate only at apices, lateral and axillary microphylls without auricles, and megaspores white to cream (when mature). The megaspore surfaces are reticulate with granulose microsculpture; the microspore surfaces are covered with irregularly spaced and sized verrucae.

In the protologue, Buck (1986) indicated that the axillary microphylls have a short auricle, but this structure was not seen in any specimen examined. As Goes-Neto (2016) indicated, most of the specimens cited above were previously misidentified as Selaginella marginata (Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd.) Spring, a very similar species. According to Assis (2016) Selaginella parviarticulata is part of a group of species belonging to the “Selaginella marginata complex”. This author also highlighted that some specimens of S. marginata from the campos rupestres of Minas Gerais and drier areas from Bahia are shorter and quite similar to S. parviarticulata. These specimens of S. marginata differ from S. parviarticulata by having lateral micro- phylls conspicuously auriculate at the acroscopic base (vs without auricle) and peltate (vs basifixed) axillary microphylls.
