    Habit
    Small tree usually 8–15 m. high, but sometimes flowering as a shrub c. 3 m. high.
    Leaves
    Leaves subcoriaceous, drying blackish–brown above, paler brown beneath; lamina up to 7 x 2·2 cm, very variable in shape; lower surface glabrous except for a few setulose hairs towards the base of the midrib; midrib prominent above, often impressed beneath; nerves almost or quite invisible.
    Flowers
    Male flowers subsessile, axillary or ramuligerous, solitary or in fascicles of 2–7; pedicels 0·05 cm. long, densely setulose. Female flowers as in male but corolla only 0·6 cm. long.
    Calyx
    Calyx 0·125–0·15 cm. long, sparsely setulose outside, margin ciliolate, glabrous inside; lobes 3, up to 0·06 cm. long, hemi–orbicular.
    Corolla
    Corolla c. 0·9–1 x 0·275 cm.; tube 0·8 cm. long; lobes 0·15 cm. long, ascending, scarcely longer than broad.

    Corolla c. 0·9–1 x 0·275 cm.; tube 0·8 cm. long; lobes 0·15 cm. long, ascending, scarcely longer than broad. Male flowers subsessile, axillary or ramuligerous, solitary or in fascicles of 2–7; pedicels 0·05 cm. long, densely setulose.     Stamens c. 9, included, c. 0·45 cm. long; filaments 0·05 cm. long, inserted on the receptacle, densely setulose; anthers 0·4 cm. long, linear–lanceolate, markedly apiculate; connective setulose towards base on both surfaces, otherwise glabrous.
    Pistillodes
    Pistillode represented by a tuft of hairs.
    Staminodes
    Staminodes 4–8, lanceolate, 0·25 cm. long, with a tuft of strigulose hairs at base of antherode.
    Ovary
    Ovary narrowly ovoid–conoidal, together with the style 0·3 x 0·15 cm., glabrous, encircled at the base by a fringe of hairs; locules 4, uniovulate; stigmata 2, fleshy, sessile, irregularly lobed, 0·1 cm. long.
