    Leaf lamina
Lamina pinnate to 3-pinnate, often proliferous near apex.
    Pinnae
    Pinnae opposite to alternate, petiolulate.

    [FTEA]

Dryopteridaceae, JP Roux, M Shaffer-Fehre, B Verdcourt. Flora of Tropical East Africa. 2007

    Habit
    Terrestrial or epilithic
    Rhizomes
    Rhizome short, suberect to erect
    Leaves
Fronds tufted; stipe and rachis with adaxial groove not opening to sulci of lower order axes Blade 1-pinnate, narrowly oval, apex imparipinnate or pinnatifid, acuminate ± falcate and auricled on acrosopic side basally.
    Leaf lamina
    Lamina herbaceous to coriaceous
    Leaf veins
Veins anastomosing with simple excurrent included veinlets, the latter bearing sori.
    Indumentum
Indumentum of narrow paleae occurring on rhizome and axes, also with simple centrally pluriseriate hairs occurring abaxially on lamina
    Sori
Sori round, indusium large, peltate, persistent or caducous
    Note
Phanerophlebia (America) and Cyrtomium (Asia, Hawaii) are closely related genera of the tropics, separated on account of their venation. Both genera were described by Presl; Tryon & Tryon (1982) treated the former as Phanerophlebia, but present literature largely retains Cyrtomium for the Old World genera. Kramer in Kubitzki does still only recognise Polystichum; he argues that Cyrtomium and Phanerophlebia have characters that are not sufficiently correlated or constant. A temperate or tropical genus of 9 species, centred in eastern Asia. Until recently treated as Phanerophlebia Presl (Tryon & Tryon, 1982), a name now reserved for the neotropical species of the genus (Kramer et al. in Kubitzki, Fam. Gen. Vasc. Pl. I: 114 (1990)).
