    Habit
    Erect or procumbent, dioecious or monoecious shrubs or rarely trees.
    Leaves
    Leaves of species in F.Z. area trifoliolate (rarely unifoliolate by suppression of the lateral leaflets); leaflets oblanceolate to linear; stipules triangular, acute, adnate to the petiole and sheathing the stem.
    Flowers
    Male flowers with (3)4 petaloid, free or ± connate calyx-lobes and (3)4 or (6)8 or up to 50 stamens. Female flowers with calyx segments connate below into a ribbed, winged or smooth tube enveloping the receptacle; free lobes of the calyx (3)4, deciduous or persistent in fruit; styles 1 or 2, long and filiform or very short; stigma lacerate-multifid. Flowers unisexual (very rarely bisexual), axillary, usually solitary, petals 0.

    Achenes 1 or 2, enveloped by the ± inflated, persistent calyx-tube.
