    Habit
    Much-branched perennial to 1.5–2 m. tall or more; stems upright to decumbent, glabrous or the youngest parts pilose, but then soon becoming glabrescent.
    Leaves
    Leaves in whorls of 3–5, rarely opposite; petiole 7–20 mm. long, slender, with several ± 1 mm. long cilia towards the top and at the base of the lamina; lamina narrowly ovate, lanceolate or elliptic, 3.5–9 cm. long, 1.5–4 cm. broad, apex acute, often shortly acuminate, base shortly cuneate, sparsely pilose above and beneath or glabrous above; lateral veins 5–9 pairs; margin finely serrate-crenate.
    Flowers
    Flowers 1 to each leaf-axil, pale mauvy pink, reddish pink, pale purple or reddish violet.
    Bracts
    Bracts subulate, 2–4 mm. long, basal, inconspicuous.
    Pedicel
    Pedicels 4.4–5 cm. long, slender, sparsely pilose or glabrous.
    Calyx
    Lateral sepals linear-lanceolate, 4–5 mm. long, acute, sparsely pilose. Lower sepal navicular, 11–13 mm. long, abruptly constricted into a 3–4.5 cm. long curved filiform spur, sparsely pilose, rarely glabrous.
    Corolla
    Dorsal petals suborbicular, 11–14 mm. long, 18–20 mm. broad, dorsally with a narrow crest, the crest usually somewhat pilose towards the base. Lateral united petals 16–21 mm. long, the upper and lower petals of each pair not usually overlapping; upper petal oblong or obovate, 14–18 mm. long, 8–9 mm. broad, entire or slightly emarginate; lower petal obovate, 15–18 mm. long, 8–11 mm. broad, entire.
    Ovary
    Ovary densely pilose in the central region.
    Fruits
    Fruit narrow-fusiform, 17 mm. long, 3 mm. broad, sparsely pilose.
    Habitat
    In upland rain-forest and on the margins of rivers and swampy areas; 1000–2300 m.
