    Habit
    Perennial. Rhizomes elongated. Culms erect; 100-170 cm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane; 5-8 mm long. Leaf-blades 25-40 cm long; 7-13 mm wide; glaucous. Leaf-blade surface scabrous. Leaf-blade apex acuminate.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescence a panicle. Panicle open; lanceolate, or oblong; dense; 18-20 cm long; 5 cm wide. Primary panicle branches 5-10 cm long. Panicle branches scabrous. Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

    Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 5.5-7 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus bearded. Floret callus hairs 0.5 length of lemma.

    Fertile lemma lanceolate; 3.5-5.5 mm long; membranous; without keel; 5 -veined. Lemma apex dentate; 2 -fid; awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn dorsal; arising 0.25 way up back of lemma; geniculate; 3-6 mm long overall; with twisted column. Rhachilla extension 1 mm long; pilose; with 2-4 mm long hairs.

    Lodicules 2. Anthers 3. Stigmas 2.
    Fruits
    Caryopsis with adherent pericarp. Hilum punctiform. Disseminule comprising a floret.
    Distribution
    Asia-temperate: Siberia, Soviet Middle Asia, and Mongolia.
