    Perennial. Rhizomes short. Basal innovations extravaginal. Culms erect; 60-130 cm long; 2-3 -noded. Leaf-sheaths glabrous on surface, or pubescent. Ligule an eciliate membrane; erose. Leaf-blades 4-6 mm wide.

    Inflorescence a panicle. Panicle open; oblong; nodding; 15-30 cm long. Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

    Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 5-6.5 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus bearded. Floret callus hairs 1 length of lemma.

    Fertile lemma lanceolate; 3-4.5 mm long; membranous; without keel; 5 -veined. Lemma apex acute; awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn dorsal; arising 0.66 way up back of lemma; straight; 1-3 mm long overall. Rhachilla extension 0.2-2 mm long; pilose.
    Flowers
    Lodicules 2. Anthers 3; 0.3-0.8 mm long. Stigmas 2.
    Fruits
    Caryopsis with adherent pericarp; oblong; 2-3 mm long. Hilum punctiform. Disseminule comprising a floret.

    North America: Mexico. South America: western South America, Brazil, and southern South America.
