    Habit
    Perennial gynodioecious herb, 0.4–1.2 m tall, with musty scent, with spreading underground rhizomes

    Flowering stems erect, branched, quadrangular, white- or grey-villous, sometimes sparsely hairy
    Leaves
    Leaves sessile or very shortly petiolate; blades usually lanceolate or oblanceolate or oblong-elliptic, 4–11 × 1–4 cm, serrate with usually irregular, patent teeth, acute at apex, truncate or rounded at base, smooth or slightly rugose especially near base, green, subglabrous above, grey- or white-villous beneath, with scattered sessile glands, often hidden by indumentum, hairs simple; petiole 0–1.5 mm long

    Inflorescences branched and forming a slender, terminal, spiciform thyrse, 4–10 × 0.9–1.3 cm, with usually many congested verticils, the lower sometimes remote, bracteoles narrowly linear-elliptic, up to 7 mm long

    Calyx narrowly campanulate, 2.2–2.8 mm long at anthesis, pubescent and with sessile glands; lobes subequal, narrowly triangular to subulate, acute, 0.9–1.1 mm long
