    Perennial, sometimes aromatic, scandent or ascending herb, 0.2–3 m long
    Stems quadrangular, branching above, usually armed with retrorse, swollen-based rigid prickles on angles, rarely these absent, and with patent or retrorse softer hairs or otherwise glabrous, sometimes glandular hairs present
    Leaves narrowly ovate, ovate, broadly ovate or reniform, 0.9–9.3 × 0.5–7.5 cm, crenate, apex obtuse to acute (rarely rounded), base cordate (rarely truncate), subglabrous to laxly pubescent, sometimes armed with swollen-based prickles below, sometimes with glandular hairs; petioles (0.5–)3–70 mm long, pubescent, sometimes with glandular hairs
    Inflorescence terminal, lax, verticils (4–)6-flowered, 2–90 mm apart; bracts similar to cauline leaves but smaller, elliptic-ovate, ovate-lanceolate or lanceolate, 2.5–22 mm long, 0.5–15 mm wide; bracteoles subulate, ± 0.5–3 mm long, pubescent or glabrous; pedicels 0.5–2 mm long, pubescent or glabrous, sometimes with glandular hairs
    Calyx patent or slightly ascending, campanulate, 3.5–13 mm long at anthesis, scarcely larger in fruit, sparsely pubescent; teeth triangular, sometimes narrowly so, 1–4 mm long, ± spinescent, straight or slightly recurved
    Corolla white, pink or purple, with purple or pink flecks on anterior lip, 4.5–28 mm long, pubescent on outer surface, denser on posterior lip; tube 3–13 mm long, straight; anterior lip (1–)2–19 mm long; posterior lip (0.5–)2.5–15 mm long
    Nutlets dark brown, broadly ovoid, 2–3 mm long, minutely tuberculate.
