Acanthaceae (part 1), Kaj Vollesen, Flora of Tropical East Africa, 2008

    Leaves
Leaves usually subequal; lamina linear-lanceolate to narrowly ovate, largest 6–17 × 0.4–1(–1.7) cm, margin of some or all with a few teeth in basal half, subglabrous to pilose, finely scabrid-ciliate on margins.
    Flowers
Heads from near base to top of plant, subsessile; floral leaves and outer bracts lanceolate to narrowly obovate, up to 4 cm long, glabrous to finely sericeous, no capitate glands; inner bracts 8–18 mm long, linear-oblong.
    Calyx

Filaments 4–9 mm long, glabrous; appendage ± 1 mm long, rounded, tip curved in towards anther; anthers 2.5–4.5 mm long.

    Distribution
Range: Tanzania. Range: Not known elsewhere Flora districts: T1 T2 T4 T5 T6 T7 T8 Range: Not known elsewhere
    Ecology
Seasonally waterlogged Acacia bushland and grassland on grey to black clay; (200–)1000–1500 m
    Note
But where local conditions allow it to continue growing into the dry season more robust plants often develop, usually ± branched and often procumbent. Bax 311 is a good example of this robust late season form. Blepharis longifolia normally flowers in the rainy season as an erect ± unbranched herb. The type is no longer extant, but this is the only species from anywhere near the type-locality which fits the original description.
