    Habit
    Erect to procumbent single-stemmed unbranched or slightly branched annual herb; stems up to 40 cm long, hispid-pubescent or sparsely so with shiny many-celled hairs and sometimes with a band of puberulous hairs.
    Leaves
    Leaves with the subequal or smaller pair 2/3 of larger; lamina linear to narrowly ovate-elliptic, largest 4–15 × 0.2–1.5 cm, margin on or some or all with 1–3 small teeth per side in basal half, subglabrous to hispid-pubescent along midrib, hispid-puberulous above.
    Flowers
    Heads dense or elongated and up to 7 cm long, near base or towards tip of stems, sessile (rarely with peduncle up to 1(–2) cm long); axes sericeous-puberulous, with scattered stalked capitate glands; floral leaves and outer bracts lanceolate to ovate-elliptic, up to 7 cm long, finely sericeous-puberulous, with few to many capitate glands; inner bracts similar, up to 2.5 cm long.
    Calyx
    Sepals puberulous or sparsely so, often also with pilose hairs, with capitate glands; upper ovate-elliptic or narrowly so, 14–21 mm long, narrowing gradually or with slightly ligulate apical part, apex acute, with 1–3 lateral teeth per side; lower elliptic-obovate, 12–19 mm long, not or slightly ligulate, deeply bifid, with or without central and with 1–3 lateral teeth per side; lateral 10–18 mm long.
    Corolla
    Corolla pale to dark blue to mauve, 15–26 mm long of which the tube 2–6 mm; limb distinctly 3-lobed, below with scattered capitate glands, callus with 3 equally strong ribs, with 2 strong lateral apical flanges, central weak.
    Filaments
    Filaments 2–6 mm long, broad pair or all with long hairs on inside, all sparsely glandular; tooth 1–3 mm long, tapering to a rounded tip, curved; anthers 2.5–4 mm long.
    Fruits
    Capsule 8–13 mm long.
    Seeds
    Seed ± 7 × 5.5 mm.
