    Habit
    Erect or procumbent annual herb; stems up to 35 cm long, finely sericeous on one side.
    Leaves
    Leaves very dissimilar: the laminate pair of each whorl with lamina linear-lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, largest 4–7.5 × 0.4–1.3 cm, margin entire, glabrous below but for a few hairs along midrib, above with puberulous midrib, scabrid along margins; the alternate pair reduced to robust very pungent 3-fid spines, central tooth 3–10 mm long, lateral shorter.
    Flowers
    Heads from near base to top of stems; floral leaves and outer bracts lanceolate, up to 3.5(–5) cm long, very finely sericeous, no capitate glands; inner bracts 1–2 cm long, linear-lanceolate.
    Calyx
    Sepals with indument as bracts, finely ciliate; dorsal ovate-elliptic, 11–14 mm long, narrowing gradually to the cuspidate apex, no lateral teeth; ventral similar, 10–13 mm long, with two acuminate teeth; lateral 9–11 mm long.
    Corolla
    Corolla pale blue to bright blue (rarely white), 9–14 mm long of which the tube 2.5–5 mm; callus with 3 indistinct apical flanges.
    Filaments
    Filaments ± 1 mm long, ± included in tube, glabrous; appendage 1–1.5 mm long, rounded; anthers 1–1.5 mm long.
    Fruits
    Capsule 6–7 mm long.
    Seeds
    Seed ovoid, ± 5 × 3 mm.
