    Habit
    Perennial herb with a stout woody rootstock; stems appressed strigulose, procumbent, erect or spreading, up to 50 cm. long.
    Leaves
    Lower leaves (which are those most often seen) 1–3-foliolate, upper up to 8-foliolate; stipules narrowly triangular-subulate, up to 8 mm. long; rhachis broad, channelled above, up to 4 cm. long, including a petiole of up to 1 cm., prolonged up to 8 mm. beyond the lateral leaflets; leaflets always alternate, cuneate-elliptic or narrowly oblong, up to 6 cm. long and 12 mm. wide, strigulose beneath, minutely black-spotted and glabrous above, except at the margins which are strigulose.
    Inflorescences
    Racemes many-flowered, up to 12 cm. long in fruit, including a peduncle of 0.5–2 cm.; bracts lanceolate, strigulose, deciduous.
    Calyx
    Calyx strigulose, divided almost to the base, ± 4 mm. long.
    Stamens
    Stamens 3–4 mm. long.
    Fruits
    Pods straight, faintly tetragonal, brown, 12–20 mm. long, ± 2 mm. wide and 1.3 mm. thick, strigulose, 5–8-seeded; endocarp faintly spotted.
    Habitat
    Short grassland, roadsides, cultivated areas and Combretum, etc. wooded grassland; 800–1800 m.; rainfall 1100–1900 mm.
