    Habit
    An erect herb.
    Leaves
    Resembles I. trachyphylla, but the leaves are less than 3 times as long as wide (up to 2 cm. wide in stout examples) and more abruptly narrowed, truncate, or even subcordate at the base.
    Infructescences
    The infructescence is up to 8 cm. long, about as long as the peduncle.
    Flowers
    The calyx-lobes and stamens are up to 6 mm. long.
    Indumentum
    The biramous hairs on the pods are almost wholly black.
    Habitat
    Upland open or wooded grassland; 1400–2100 m.; rainfall 1100–1300 mm.
