    Habit
    Perennial herb from a strong rootstock.
    Stem
    Stems prostrate, pilose, often rooting at the nodes.
    Leaves
    Leaves long-petioled; leaflets orbicular-obovate, rounded, truncate or emarginate at the tip, glabrous above but silky pilose at the margins, on the midrib beneath and also (except in var. glabrescens) on the underside of the lower half of the 2 lateral leaflets, faintly toothed, strongly veined; petiole glabrous or silky pilose; stipules whitish, with falcate-triangular tips usually rather longer than the base.

    Inflorescence ± globose; peduncle longer than the leaves, pilose; bracts up to 0.5 mm long or absent.
    Flowers
    Flowers with pedicels pilose, reflexed in fruit.
    Calyx
    Calyx glabrous or thinly silky; tube 11-nerved; teeth equal to the tube.
    Corolla
    Corolla white, pink or purplish-red.
    Stamens
    Stamens c. 5 mm long.
    Ovary
    Ovary stipitate; ovules 3–6.
    Fruits
    Pod oblong, 2–6-seeded.
    Seeds
    Seeds light brown, irregularly discoid.
