    Habit
    Perennial herb up to 1·5 m. tall, producing annual shoots from a woody root-stock; stems somewhat scabrous, densely stellate-setose.
    Leaves
    Leaf-lamina 1·5–6 × 0·6–4 cm., ovate to narrowly oblong, ± deeply 3-lobed, densely stellate-hispid on both surfaces, apex obtuse or rounded, margin irregularly crenate-serrate, base usually truncate 5–7-nerved; petiole 3–4·5 cm. long; stipules 2 mm. long, acicular.
    Flowers
    Flowers 3–3·5 cm. in diam., red, solitary, axillary and forming terminal racemes by reduction of the upper leaves.
    Epicalyx
    Epicalyx of 5–7 bracts; bracts 4–5 mm. long, linear.
    Calyx
    Calyx 12 mm. long, densely pilose; lobes 8–10 × 2·5–3·5 mm., lanceolate, acute.
    Corolla
    Petals 2 × 1·5–1·8 cm., stellate-pilose outside, glabrous inside.
    Stamens
    Staminal tube 5–6 mm. long; free parts of filaments 2–4 mm. long.
    Style
    Style-branches 4–4·5 mm. long.
    Fruits
    Capsule 8–10 × 8–10 mm., subglobose, pubescent.
    Seeds
    Seeds with a white silky floss.
