    Habit
    Shrub 2–4.5 m tall.
    Stem
    Stems glabrous, green when young, becoming longitudinally ridged and grey with age
    Leaves
    Leaves ovate or lanceolate, 4–10 × 1–5 cm, apex acute or acuminate, base cuneate to obtuse, rarely rounded, margin undulate, serrate or crenate, glabrous; petiole glabrous with a line of white pubescence adaxially, 4–37 mm long; stipules lanceolate, 0.5–3 × 0.1–0.5 mm, with or without scattered stellate hairs
    Flowers
    Flowers solitary in the leaf axils; pedicel articulated in the lower half, sparsely pubescent; epicalyx of 8 triangular bracts, 1–3 × 0.5 mm, glabrous or sparsely pubescent; calyx lobes fused into a 12–15 mm long, 2-lipped tube, the lips toothed or not, glabrous or sparsely pubescent
    Corolla
    Corolla 3–4 cm long, red, fimbriate, reflexed, glabrous.
    Stamens
    Staminal column 4–5 cm long, the lower half filament-free; filaments 3–10 mm long; exserted parts of styles 6–23 mm long, glabrous
    Fruits
    Capsule obovoid or cylindrical, 19–36 mm long, 15 mm diameter, puberulous.
    Seeds
    Seeds triangular, brown, 2–4 × 2–3 mm, pubescent.

    Coastal bushland and forest; 0–200 m
