    Malvaceae, A. W. Exell. Flora Zambesiaca 1:2. 1961

    Habit
Plant said to be shrubby but probably a much-branched perennial herb; stems rather sparsely pilose or setose-pilose, with one or two longitudinal lines of pubescence changing their radial position at each node, rather densely aculeate with stout usually unbranched deflexed prickles.

    Flowers
Flowers 4–5 cm. in diam., yellow with a violet centre, solitary, axillary; peduncle 4–8 mm. long, hispid.

Malvaceae, Bernard Verdcourt & Geoffrey Mwachala. Pavonia, B Verdcourt; Kosteletzkya, OJ Blanchard Jr.; Gossypium, P Fryxell & B Verdcourt. Flora of Tropical East Africa. 2009

    Type
Type: Mozambique: Niassa, Vila Cabral, July 1934, Torre 435 (COI, holo.; BM, iso.)
    Note
Wilson in Bull. Nat. Hist. Mus. Lond. (Bot.) 29(1): 59 (1999) mentions this species as occurring in southern Tanzania, and cites two specimens: TANZANIA. Iringa District: Uhafiwa, 3 August 1989, Kayombo 795 A & Luhega forest near Uhafiwa, 10 June 1989, Lovett et al. 3287. I have seen neither of these, but according to the Tropicos website the second was identified as H. noldeae by Fryxell; which is also puzzling, as that taxon is not known from T 7 either. As I have not seen the specimens H. torrei is restricted to northern Mozambique, and is only known from the type.
