    Scrambling or scandent shrub to 2 m tall, forming large tangles; young stems green, finely puberulous in two bands, soon glabrous

    Leaves ovate to elliptic, largest 15–18 × 5.5–8 cm, apex subacuminate, base attenuate, decurrent to the 1–4 cm long petiole, margin indistinctly crenate, glabrous

    Cymes simple, racemiform or with two additional cymes from lowermost pair of bracts, 5–10 cm long; peduncle 1.5–4 cm long; axes with indumentum as stems; bracts caducous, green or with whitish basal part, lowermost pairs sometimes foliaceous; pedicels (below bracteoles) 1–2 mm long; bracteoles with green basal part and white towards apex, ovate to elliptic, 7–10 × 2–5 mm, glabrous

    Calyx whitish at base, pale pink upwards, 1.3–1.8(–2.2 in fruit) cm long of which the basal tube 1–2 mm, densely glandular-pubescent with glands to 1 mm long; lobes linear, subacute

    Corolla tube and lobes in upper lip pure white, lobes in lower lip dark purple, pubescent with curly hairs to 1 mm long; cylindric tube 1.5–1.8 cm long and 2–4 mm in diameter, throat gibbose, 1.7–1.9 cm long and 1–1.2 cm in diameter at apex; lobes erect in upper lip, reflexed in lower, narrowly triangular, 6–7 × 3–4 mm, subacute to rounded

    Stamens held under upper lip, didynamous; filaments ± 1.7 and 1.9 cm long, glabrous; anthers narrowly oblong, curved, ± 3 (? non-functional) and 4.5 mm long, connective and sides of thecae with long curly hairs

    In two of the Tanzanian collections the two short stamens seem to have non-functional anthers with one theca much shorter than the other.
