Flora Zambesiaca Acanthaceae (part 2) by Iain Darbyshire, Kaj Vollesen and Ensermu Kelbessa

Stout suffrutex with erect stems from a woody base, 25–50 cm tall; stems with dense appressed or ascending long buff to golden hairs, upper internodes also with short spreading eglandular and/or glandular hairs.
Leaves somewhat coriaceous, narrowly oblong-elliptic to lanceolate, 8.5–12.5 × 2–3 cm, base cuneate to rounded, apex acute, surfaces with long buff-coloured hairs most numerous on margin and veins beneath; lateral veins (5)6–8 pairs, prominent beneath; petiole 2–6 mm long.
Inflorescences compounded into a dense cylindrical or conical spike 4–15 cm long, each cyme 1 to few-flowered, sessile; bracts imbricate and largely enclosing calyx, elliptic, 26–34 × 11–18 mm, apex obtuse or rounded, apiculate, indumentum as leaves with additional short spreading eglandular and minute glandular hairs; bracteoles narrowly elliptic or obovate, 22–33 × 5–10 mm, often triplinerved, base attenuate, margin entire, apex acute, subattenuate or obtuse, mucronulate.
Calyx at first purplish but turning pale-scarious, somewhat accrescent; anterior lobe broadly ovate, 20–27 × 13–22 mm, base shortly and broadly attenuate then rounded or subcordate, margin coarsely and irregularly dentate, teeth with an apical bristle, apex acute-mucronate or bifidly so, surfaces with numerous long subappressed buff-coloured hairs most dense within and along margin, with minute spreading glandular hairs most numerous along margin; posterior lobe as anterior but 24–33 mm long, apex acute-mucronate; lateral lobes lanceolate, 10–16 mm long.
Corolla 40–45 mm long, white, limb pubescent externally with mixed eglandular and glandular hairs; tube subcylindrical, 25–30 mm long; limb in 2+3 arrangement; abaxial and lateral lobes 14–17 × 9–12 mm; adaxial lobes 8–11 × 3.5–6.5 mm.
Stamens attached ± midway along corolla tube; filaments c.12 mm long; anthers shortly exserted, 2.5–3 mm long; lateral staminodes c.3 mm long, pilose in proximal half, antherodes c.0.7 mm long.
Ovary with apical ring of short pale hairs; style glabrous; stigma clavate, 0.6–0.8 mm long.
    Capsule c.20 mm long, glabrous.
    Seeds c.7.5 × 5.5 mm.
Also in southern D.R. Congo (Shaba plateau).
Marquesia woodland, but in Congo in Brachystegia and Julbernardia woodland; c.1250 m.
Conservation notes: Rare, currently known from only 7 collections with only one in Zambia; probably best considered Data Deficient, but may prove to be threatened.
