In deep shade in leaf litter on banks in temperate mixed forest; 2000-3000 m in China and Taiwan, but down to 1300 m inJapan. Flowering in May and June.

General Description

A dwarf colony-forming herb with a short rhizome; roots elongate, villose. Stems solitary or clustered, slender, 8-18 cm long, glabrous, subtended by two sheaths at the base, bifoliate at the apex. Leaves subopposite, spreading, heart-shaped, subacute, 3.2-7 cm long, 2.4-5.7 cm wide, strongly three-veined on underside, the margins often undulate. Inflorescence pendent; peduncle arcuate, slender, 1.3-6.5 cm long; bract linear-filiform, acute, 1.52.9 cm long. Flower small, hidden under the leaf, pale green with a white lip and marked with maroon at the base of the segments and inside the lip; pedicel and ovary 0.9-1.5 cm long, glabrous. Dorsal sepal elliptic-ovate or ovate-lanceolate, acute, 1.5-1.9 cm long, 5.57.5 mmwide; synsepal narrowly elliptic, acute, 1.1-1.4 cm long, 3.55 mm wide. Petals curved forwards, lanceolate, acute, 1.4-1.8 cm long, 3-5 mm wide. Lip small, subellipsoid, 1-1.5 cm long. Column 3 mm long; staminode ovate, very small, 1-1.5 mm long, green with a purple apex.
