China (SE. Xizang (Tibet), NW. Yunnan, Sichuan, W. Hubei, S. Gansu).

General Description

A terrestrial herb with solitary or clustered, erect, shortly pubescent, leafy stems, 17-60 cm long; rhizome stout, short or elongate. Leaves 6-10, well-spaced along the stem, ovate-elliptic to lanceolate-elliptic, acute to acuminate, the largest in the upper part of the stem 9-17.5 cm long, 4.2-12 cm wide, the Iowermost three to four sheathing, shortly ciliate, pubescent on both sides. Inflorescence one-flowered; peduncle 3.5-14 cm long, pubescent; bract leafy, lanceolate or elliptic, acute, 4.5-7.9 cm long, 2-2.2 cm wide, pubescent. Flower pale to butter yellow, sometimes flushed with red on the dorsal sepal, petals and/or lip, spotted with maroon inside the lip, sometimes spotted on the outside oflip; pedicel and ovary 3-4 cm long, very pubescent with rusty hairs. Dorsal sepal elliptic- or ovate-oblong, obtuse, (1.6-)3-4.2 cm long, 1.2-3.8 cm wide, shortly ciliate; synsepal elliptic, obtuse, (1.7-) 2.8-3.4 cm long, (1-) 1.7-2.6 cm wide, glabrous. Petals spreading or recurved, obliquely oblong-lanceolate, obtuse, (1.5-)3.2-3.8 cm long, (0.7-) 1.2-1.5 cm wide, pubescent in basal part only, shortly ciliate. Lip globose-ellipsoidal, (1.8-)2.9-4.7 cm long, with the apical margin acutelyinfolded. Column 1-1.1 cm long; staminode longitudinally concave, broadly ovate or subcordate, obtuse, 6-6.5 mm long, 5 mm wide, yellow, yellow with black-maroon marked apex, or maroon.

Habitat

In open woodland and scrub, on the edges of coniferous and mixed coniferous and broadleaf forest and on margins of glacial torrents; 2700-3700 m.
